Estimating Your Future Child's Height Based on the Height of a Sperm Donor

Updated: May 13

We know that a donor's height isn't the most important factor for most families, but many are still curious how tall their children are expected to be! Below is one example of a method of calculating an estimate of your child's height based on the height of the sperm donor.

Mid-Parental Height Formula

  1. Add Your Heights: Add the heights of the biological parent and sperm donor together in inches.

  2. Calculate Average Height: Divide the total height by 2 to find the average height of the parent and donor.

  3. Adjust for Gender: If estimating the height of a male offspring, add 5 inches to the average height. If estimating the height of a female offspring, subtract 5 inches from the average height

  4. Final Estimate: The adjusted average height is the estimated adult height of your child.

Example

Parent 1 is 5'4" (64 inches) and Sperm donor is 6'0" (72 inches)

Adding the heights of both = 136 inches

Average height = 136/2 = 68 inches

Male offspring estimated to be 68 + 5 = 73" or 6'1"

Female offspring estimated to be 68 - 5 = 63" or 5'3"

Estimating your child's adult height based on the height of biological parents can provide a rough approximation, but it's important to note that height is influenced by multiple factors, including genetics, nutrition, health, and environmental factors. While genetic factors play a significant role in determining height, they are not the sole determinant.
