Would I qualify as a sperm donor?

Have you ever thought about being a known sperm donor and wondered what exactly makes a "good" or "qualified" sperm donor? At The Seed Scout, we take many things into consideration. Read below to learn more!

1. Medical History

At The Seed Scout, our top priority is your honesty and openness about your medical history. We have no specific medical history that disqualifies you from being a known sperm donor through our company. Rather, each client will have the ability to make an informed decision about which sperm donor is best for their family. Genetic counselors are available for recipient parents to review the risks of inheritable conditions that may run in your family.

2. Semen Analysis

In order to qualify as a sperm donor, you must be fertile! There are many causes of male factor infertility and low sperm counts: genetic conditions, environmental exposures (ex. excessive heat), medications (ex. Testosterone and Finasteride), and more. Prior to donations, a semen analysis is required to ensure that sperm counts, motility, and other important characteristics are within a normal range.

3. Genetic Compatibility

Prior to becoming a sperm donor through The Seed Scout, a carrier (recessive) gene test is completed. This genetic screen tests for abnormal copies of a gene. Donors often show no signs or symptoms of this abnormal copy. This testing is important because if a recipient parent shares the same abnormal copy, there is a chance the donor conceived child will inherit both abnormal copies resulting in a genetic disease or condition. Ultimately, if you are found to have one or more carrier genes (most of us have at least one), you are still able to donate to any recipient parent that doesn't share the same abnormal gene.

4. Emotional Maturity

Known sperm donation can bring about various emotions for all parties involved. A great donor demonstrates emotional maturity and resilience, able to navigate potential challenges or changes in circumstances with grace and understanding.

5. Respect for Boundaries and Privacy

Respecting boundaries and privacy is essential in known sperm donation arrangements. A good donor understands and respects the boundaries set by the recipient parent(s) regarding the level of involvement and contact with the child. Thorough conversations regarding involvement are encouraged prior to donations being completed to ensure all parties are on the same page.

6. Genuine Desire to Help

Ultimately, an amazing known sperm donor has a genuine desire to help others achieve their dream of parenthood. They approach the donation process with compassion, empathy, and a commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of others. By embodying these qualities and characteristics, a known sperm donor can contribute to a positive and supportive donation experience for all involved parties.
